Students to Protest for Imran Khan’s Release

Students in Pakistan are gearing up for significant protests demanding the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan on Independence Day, August 14. The Pakistan Student Federation (PSF) has announced an ultimatum to the government, insisting that Imran Khan must be released by August 30, or they will organize nationwide protests. This initiative by students aligns with broader political tensions and unrest in the country following Imran Khan’s arrest on August 5, 2023, related to the Toshakhana case.

Khan’s imprisonment has become a focal point of contention, especially for the youth who view him as a symbol of resistance against the current political regime. The PSF and other student organizations are mobilizing to ensure their voices are heard, with plans to hold demonstrations across major cities, including Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad. The students’ demands are not just limited to Imran Khan’s release but also encompass calls for addressing the economic crisis and other governance issues that have plagued the country.

Parallel to the student movements, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the party founded by Imran Khan, is organizing its own series of protests. They have planned a major rally in Islamabad at the end of August to press for Imran Khan’s release and highlight the economic hardships faced by the public. The PTI has been vocal about the alleged political witch-hunt against its members, with leaders claiming that their lawmakers and social media activists face continuous persecution by the current government (ABP Live) (The News) (DAWN).
